I am pleased to announce that after a very long night the newest Eckland has arrived. It’s a girl. Elouise Celia Selma Eckland arrived early this morning. Everyone is healthy and resting. She is 7 pounds and 21.5 inches.

it takes a village to get the lights on

On Monday, I found out that the family I work with in South Seattle had come down with swine flu and their power had been shut off. It’s hard to imagine being sick and not being able to take a hot shower or warm up some soup.

After four days of phone calls and Internet pleas, the lights have been turned on and the heat is back for the family. We managed to raise enough through online donors, the salvation army, family and friends to pay their full electric bill!

Thank you to all people who helped make this possible. Your kindness and generosity are inspiring. The family is extremely grateful to each of you.

I work with a family in South Seattle that is in desperate need of help. Their four children, ages 10-15, have contracted swine flu. The economic downturn has been especially hard on them and last night the family’s power and heat were turned off. I have spent the morning calling organizations for help but it seems we can’t get assistance until the family can pay half of the bill, 500 dollars. Can you help this family?

“The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. …it’s disheartening to read the list of people who’ve signed it. People you’d hoped would have better sense than to protest the detainment of a man who’s admitted to drugging and f***ing a 13-year-old.

They’re protesting the police detainment on the grounds that Polanski was “on his way to a film festival where he was due to receive an award for his career in filmmaking.”

I asked for nachos at Chipotle once because I had heard about the secret menu. The server looked at me like I was an idiot, then laughed in my face. Who’s laughing now server? Oh, still you. My bad.

Chipotle has a whole secret menu that is limited only by your imagination — they have a store policy that says that if they have the item available, they will make it for you. Things that have been tested include nachos, quesadillas, taco salads and single tacos.

The winner: At Fatburger, you can order a Hypocrite – a veggie burger topped with crispy strips of bacon.

Grayson: let's remember we should care about people even after they're born

Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Fla, critized Republicans lack of health care reform legislation saying, “If you get sick, America, the Republican health care plan is this: Die quickly.” In response to his origninal statement on the floor he offered this apology:

Last night, I gave a speech and I’m not going to recount everything I said but after that speech, several republicans asked me to apologize. I would like to apologize.

I would like to apologize and here’s why. according to this study, health insurance and mortality in adults which was published two weeks, 44,000 Americans die every year because they have no health insurance. 44,789 Americans die every year according to the Harvard study. and you can see it by going to our website at grayson.house.gov.

that is 10 times more than the number of Americans who have died in Iraq and who died in 9/11. but that was just once. this is every single year. that’s right. every single year.

take a look at this. read it and weep. and I mean that, read it and weep, because of all these Americans who are dying because they don’t have health insurance. now, I think we should do something about that and the democratic health care plan does do something about that. It makes health care affordable for those who can’t afford insurance and it safes these peoples’ lives.

let’s remember we should care about people even after they’re born. I call upon the democratic members of the house, I call upon the republican members of the house, I call upon all of us to do our jobs for the sake of America, for the sake of those dying people and their families.

I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven’t voted sooner to end this holocaust in America. I yield the rest of my time.
